State Route seven hundred eleven reopens after being shut down for 40-car pile up
YPD said Interstate 680, Madison Avenue and Himrod Avenue were all shut down due to multi-car crashes
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – State Route seven hundred eleven southbound near Vallourec shut down just before five p.m. Sunday due to a 40-car pile up, but reopened around 9:30 p.m.
It was the thickest of numerous car accidents all over the Valley caused by the snow and cold.
The Youngstown Police Department said Interstate 680, Madison Avenue and Himrod Avenue all shut down due to multi-car crashes around Five:30 p.m. They reopened after 9:30 p.m.
Prior to the major seven hundred eleven accident, the Ohio Department of Transportation last treated the roads three hours before.
“Roads were still a little bit raw,” said Justin Chesnic, the public information officer for ODOT. “And basically what happened was – with the wind and the cold temperatures – after the sun went down, bridges and ramps and things like that refroze a little bit.”
Also in Youngstown, the Shirley Road bridge over I-680 was closed for a few hours in both directions. Numerous witnesses confirmed a pile-up of cars on or near the bridge.
The Youngstown Fire Department said there was an entrapment from an accident on the Madison Avenue Expressway and both on-ramps for I-680 were closed before reopening around 9:30 p.m. In the same area, the on-ramp to Route sixty two was closed due to accidents.
The Austintown Township Dispatch confirmed the Mahoning Avenue Bridge over Meander Reservoir was closed due to numerous accidents for a few hours.
Bazetta Township Police confirmed numerous accidents all over the Cortland area, calling the roads “utterly unsafe.” A vehicle slipped into a police cruiser, albeit there were no injuries.
The area of I-80 East toward Cleveland and eleven South toward Canfield reopened around 6:45 p.m. It was originally shutdown after a rollover accident in the late afternoon.
ODOT sent twenty crews out Sunday night to treat the Valley’s roads and highways.
“They’re just kind of treating those ramps and bridges,” Chesnic said. “Trouble areas like that typically freeze very first and they’ll proceed to do that across the night while that sun stays down and into the morning as well.”
