German car makers to update ‘under pressure’ Five,Trio million diesel cars

German car makers, summoned to Berlin for a diesel summit ‘under pressure’ by the government, announced they are going to recall some Five,Three million diesel cars in Germany for a software update. The update should improve NOx treatment by twenty five to 30%, at least that is what Daimler puts forward for its flagship cars.
In this number of five million, Two,Five million vehicles are counted already being recalled by the Volkswagen Group and a number of cars by other German car makers, says the German car maker federation VDA. How many fresh recalls this would mean, VDA couldn’t confirm.
“Only a very first step”
At the summit in Berlin all leaders of German car makers with Volkswagen and its Audi and Porsche brands, Daimler (Mercedes-Benz), BMW, Opel (now possessed by French PSA) and the European branch of American car maker Ford were present, together with political leaders from the federal government and five German states where cars are being made, among others.
While it looks like the car manufacturers have managed to release pressure on diesel cars temporally, which risked to be banned out of all cities, Environment Minister Barbara Hendrickx stated the software update “is only a very first step”.

The software update will cost German car makers one hundred euro per car, for a total of about five hundred million euro which will mostly be spend by VW, BMW and Daimler. Stephan Weil, premier of the state of Lower Saxony, which is a shareholder of Volkswagen, said the thrust for hardware updates would proceed. A hardware update could cost as much as 1.500 euro per car.
BMW announced it would suggest customers with older diesel cars an ‘environmental bonus’ up to Two.000 euro if they trade in their car for a newer model, meeting the standards of today. The car makers will also participate in a five hundred million euro fund set up by the state governments to address pollution problems in German cities.
Only 41% of Germans have confidence
