A five-year-old boy is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car which then smashed into a house in Essex yesterday.

Police were contacted shortly before Five.15pm on Wednesday with reports a Renault Megane had collided with the child before hitting a house in Gabriel Street, Saffron Walden.

Paramedics and an air ambulance attended the scene and the boy was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle have been voluntarily interviewed by police and enquiries are continuing.

Carly Stokes, 36, who lives next door to the house, said: “I didn’t see it but I heard the bang and came running out as my children were playing in the road.

“The boy was hit by the car and dragged across the road. It was terrible because I know the family and our children play together.

“Everyone was screaming, and I found the boy lounging behind my car.”

Limin Wang, who lives at the house which was struck by the car, said: “I was cooking in the kitchen when I heard a noisy bang.

“I ran out and spotted all the commotion. There were lots of children around and people were weeping in the street.”

Mrs Wang’s hubby Yikang, who was not home from work at the time of the incident, added: “We spent the night in a hotel as there is structural harm to the house. The child is gravely injured and we hope he recovers.”

A statement on Saffron Walden Fire Station’s Facebook page said: “999 call to a car crashed into a house on Gabriel Road, Saffron Walden.

“One fire team protected the scene while police conducted their investigation.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We received a call yesterday at Five.09pm to reports of an road traffic collision involving a youthful pedestrian on Gabriel Street, Saffron Walden.

“We dispatched a community very first responder (CFR), ambulance squad, ambulance officer, and an air ambulance from the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) charity.

“At the scene the youthfull child was treated for life menacing injuries before being air lifted to Addenbrookes for further care in a critical condition.”

Gabriel Street is located in a housing development off Ashdon Road, behind Saffron Walden Community Hospital.
